What Did You Do To Prep This Week?
Many of you suggested we bring back the weekly “What Did You Do To Prep This Week” segment of the blog. I think this is a good idea. Seeing what others are doing to further their preparedness can give ideas and encouragement to those still procrastinating. Or set the idea wheels spinning for those of us who have been in this for a while.
We should all strive to do something, even if it is only something small, each week to better our preparedness level. While it may be impossible or at least unrealistic for most of us to put away a case of ammo and 500 pounds of hard red winter wheat each week, it should be our goal to do something, no matter how small, to increase our level of preparedness.
For instance; This week I went through the contents of my bug-out bag (if I’m forced to retreat from my homestead by a superior force) I try to do this at least two times per year adding and replacing contents as needed while at the same time looking for weakness in the system and correcting any potential problems.
This morning while looking around a local thrift store, I spotted four unopened boxes of 12 Ball Quart Wide Mouth Jars with corresponding lids and rings. When I inquired as to price the attendant smiled and said I could have all four boxes plus the lids and rings for $15. I’m sure these will come in handy at harvest time.
Expanding the larder this week I bought 1 gallon of apple cider vinegar, some more spices and several rolls of aluminum foil. I also bought and transferred another 100 pounds of dog food into rodent proof containers – my dogs are very important for security. Failing to provide for their needs would be a huge oversight on my part.
Well that pretty much does it for me this week – but the question remains what did you do to prep this week?

Since water is one of the most important things we need, I checked the dates on the water I have stored and replaced the out-dated containers (maximum 2 year storage) with fresh water. This is not a small undertaking, but is important. I tested the purity of the old water just to see if it was OK and it was.

Each week I make it a point to spend about $15-$20 on stuff to add to my shelves. This week I split it up between canned meat and some bandages. I gettin' to a point where I'm happy with my food/water cache, but will still add some.
So now I am getting into the phase where I want to begin storing medical supplies. I was hoping someone could help me with a question. I want to store some bottles of hydrogen peroxide and some tubes of neosporine and iodine. Does anyone know what the shelf life of these items are beyond what their dates say. I'm assuming that rubbing alcohol will last a long time, but if I'm wrong please let me know.

Finally completed a 90-day extra stock of my prescription medicines. Thanks M.D. for this heads up.

I put up another 10 gals. kerosene.
Rotated 60 gals. stored water.
Bought 25 lbs. bread flour and 2 jars yeast.
Sorted and organised canning jars and other storage containers. Cut and stacked chord of firewood.
Began planning process for medicinal plants to be grown this spring, along with other vegetables to be planted.
February 7th, 2010 at 12:05 am
Bought another wool blanket for a buck at the thrift shop, plus another tarp. Lifted up the mattress on my bed and spread both of them out there, on top of the other blankets and tarps. Tarps have a thousand uses after an emergency, and you just can never have too many wool blankets. I now have about ten tarps and a dozen blankets laid out flat underneath my mattress where they don't take up any storage space at all. I did this after watching the movie "The Road".

- Did a quick inventory of my long term food storage.
- Caught a second wind at consolidating sources and organizing my existing collection of information detailing Colonial era economy and production in my region.
Such things as:
*Charcoal making.
*Basket weaving (Heh) for baskets and Wattle & Daub.
*Quicklime production for lime mortar (Coral and limestone kilns).
*Household water purification (colonial clay/ceramic filtration).
*Local resources for construction materials and techniques (species, area found, type, specific traditional use, tooling…Etc).
*Details of various historically viable crops, pharmacopoeia, and industries of economic and/or social worth (Cane sugar, Indigo dye, Cocoa, cotton, Quinine, Kapok, Coconut oil, Sisal/cordage materials, papers, clay…Etc).
- Rest.
February 7th, 2010 at 12:45 am

Hydrogen peroxide degrades spontaneously into oxygen and water. Don't know how long this takes in a sealed container, but once the container is opened, the hydrogen peroxide is useless in 4 – 6 weeks. Tincture of iodine should never be used – it kills live tissue, making wounds more likely to get infected, rather than less. Use poviodine (brand name Betadine) solution (NOT soap!). It, as well as triple – antibiotic (neomycin, polymyxin and bacitracin) ointment have essentially unlimited shelf lives. Can't stress enough, regular soap and clean water are the best substances to clean wounds in emergency situations.
February 7th, 2010 at 1:47 am
Bought more "St. Dalfour Gourmet On The Go" canned meals from Amazon.
Much tastier than any MRE – not bad even cold.
February 7th, 2010 at 1:48 am
I continued my physical preparedness regimen by hitting the gym everyday this week. I added another handgun to the stable. picked up some ammo boxes for both ammo and a first aid kit. Also ordered some anti-biotics.
February 7th, 2010 at 2:41 am
This week I voted and I'm happy to say I voted against all the incumbents. I hope we vote them all out. I also voted against all tax increases and not to retain any of the sitting judges. Maybe we'll see some welcome change. Purchased more ammo and food for storage. Also said thanks that here in central Illinois we only received about 3 inches of snow and didn't get buried like out east. I hope everyone out there makes it thru the storm safely.
February 7th, 2010 at 2:59 am
Purchased an additional 115 lumen LED flashlight and several emergency hand/body warmers. Tested out a recently purchased rifle at the local range and discovered it needs a trip to the gunsmith.
More importantly, my preps paid off this week as I live in northern Virginia near DC; didn't need to do anything to be ready for the 24+ inches of snow. No emergency runs to the store, no major concerns if power is lost. It's a good feeling.
February 7th, 2010 at 3:24 am
Fortunately my income tax refund arrived. I purchased a pick up truck load of can goods, several new shelving units, paid off one credit card, and purchased a 1911 model handgun in 45 acp for my son's 21st birthday. I also picked up a case of .223 ammo.
February 7th, 2010 at 3:55 am
okay, I'll play…been studying permaculture and wind energy basics. Money is tight right now – so I'm stocking up on knowledge instead. TG for libraries. j.

This is my first visit to this blog, wonder what kind of reaction I will get here. I usually get kicked off or ignored.
I hope you will bear with me and research this yourself.
Link or links will be provided.
Well here goes;
I too have been prepping, because trouble is coming this way America.
This is the only hope for America!
2 Chronicles 7:14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
We are going to have some hard times for a little time, but how many are aware of what is really coming?????????
Talking about this is what usually gets me kicked off of sites.
I am a Christian, and reading God's Word shows me He does judge nations for their sins.
Let's start with 50,000,000 abortions, I mean MURDERS! 50,000,000 million reasons right there to destroy our nation.
Is America in the Bible???
In my opinion and that of many others, Revelation 18 is speaking about America.
It speaks about in one day and one hour your doom has come, (NUCLEAR ATTACK)!!!!!
And no other nation buys as many things as we do, we are the world's largest consumer nation. 70% of our GDP is from consumerism.
How come no one ever seems to mention that maybe Russia and China would see a chance to attack us in our weakness???
Well that is what is going to happen!!! Unless we repent!!!
Revelation 18:7…….. 'I sit as queen; I am not a widow,
and I will never mourn.'
8Therefore in one day her plagues will overtake her:
death, mourning and famine.
She will be consumed by fire,
for mighty is the Lord God who judges her.
9"When the kings of the earth who committed adultery with her and shared her luxury see the smoke of her burning, they will weep and mourn over her. 10Terrified at her torment, they will stand far off and cry:
" 'Woe! Woe, O great city,
O Babylon, city of power!
In one hour your doom has come!'
11"The merchants of the earth will weep and mourn over her because no one buys their cargoes any more— 12cargoes of gold, silver, precious stones and pearls; fine linen, purple, silk and scarlet cloth; every sort of citron wood, and articles of every kind made of ivory, costly wood, bronze, iron and marble; 13cargoes of cinnamon and spice, of incense, myrrh and frankincense, of wine and olive oil, of fine flour and wheat; cattle and sheep; horses and carriages; and bodies and souls of men.
Several visions of people at this site below are of a sneak nuclear attack by Russia on the East and a landing by Chinese on the west coast, and coming up through Mexico.
If you are really a Christian and seeking God, you should have no problem believing this is coming.
God always punishes sinful nations unless they repent!
Please research this.
Things are going to even worse than many believe.
Millions killed in America by nuclear bombs!
If you haven't, please get right with God through His Son Jesus.
Romans 10:9-10 9That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.
Visions of America's Destruction!
http://www.unleavenedbreadministries.org/?page=dreamsvisions#America
Please look into this!!!!!!!!!!!!
Horror upon horror is coming if we don't repent.

Actually over the last 3 weeks I developed a another alternate fresh water source which is a spring. In addition to my regular well, I have a windmill to irrigate the garden and provide fresh water should I be without electricity. I have developed a fresh water spring that is well concealed and has well concealed routes of approach but it is 2 1/2 miles away and requires travel by foot or single tracked vehicle. I now have a second spring that that is only a mile away and close to a road for easier access.

I purchased a few dozen silver coins and ordered Danner hiking boots (expensive but worth it in the long run). Re-organized/replenished my medic bag. Ordered some shotgun shells. Purchased a camp stove (multi-fuel).
February 7th, 2010 at 10:16 pm
Started a M4 build. Halfway talked 2 friends into a M4 build (they're waiting to see how mine turns out). Bought more flour, an axe, 9mm ammo and I got the wife to read "One Second After." I'll pass the book along to a friend next week just as I did "Patriots."
February 7th, 2010 at 11:17 pm
This week and last I got hold of a solar shower. One of those black ones that you sit in the sun while filled with water but, if there's no sun, I'll just put some warm water in it if need be. Got some wicks and I also found some candle shavings in a bag for $2 which, the bag says, are good for helping with fire starting. Got 2 of them, one for me and one for a family member. Studied a book by Cody Lundin, The Art of Keeping Your Ass Alive and I'm working on his other book entitled, When All Hell Breaks Loose. Good reads, too. Everything from making a lightweight kit to sanitization of water with tincture of Iodine-2%, treating wounds that are infected and lots more. He's down-to-earth and is very realistic and I really like that. Continuing to work out and have taken up the study of Chi Lel Qi Gong which is a method of natural healing and because it works, if there's no doctor, at least I and others will have a shot at living and maybe not have to suffer the consequences of certain survival nasties. Glad you send this one article in particular because it really helps to remind me to keep my thoughts on prepping each day, if not, each week.
Thanks, M.D.!

Received "When All Hell Breaks Loose" from Amazon. Just started reading it…it is entertaining as well as informative. Too early yet to critique.
Received 1.5 Liter water bladder to fit in my Tru-Spec tactical vest's back pocket (it was designed for that).
Received my Bushnell Back-Track (so far it seems to work ok).
Put back an additional 10 gallons of water.
Started exercising more…prepping with things is not enough. You need to be in you best physical and mental state to be able to tackle what is thrown your way.
Still so much more to do!

Canned 50 pounds of potatoes, also carrots and strawberry jelly; ordered 10 6 gallon buckets of wheat, some sucanat, etc., bought essential oils to make my own Thieves Oil which (diffused in our house) has kept us flu-free for months now; started eating some of our canned foods to get used to what we'll be eating if that's all there is. Too yummy, have to resist eating it all.

Prepping this week?
Finished building another AR/M4 & began building another AR lower receiver. Ordered another AR spare parts kit & 10 mags, along with some 10/22 mags too. Obtained some free food grade buckets. Purchased another 4,200 .22 shells. Sighted in the 10/22 rifle I got last month & practiced pistol double taps. Purchased a travel berkey water filtration system. Played with the short wave radio some, disappointed thus far, should not judge it too much until I find a better antenna. Compiled another bug out pack for my daughter which includes NBC mask. Recharged all my portable batteries. Picked up some canned goods & another bow saw. Watched the movie “The Road.” Also watched the history of the M-16 rifle on history channel, learned some interesting things. Figured I’m doing well in the weapon department now with two & three weapons in the common calibers, just need to resume my reloading duties. Filled all propane tanks. Somewhat surprised the girl friend wants to prep some, shows interest in my activities. Ordered KIO3 iodate tablets, remote thermostat for smoker, more mylar food bags, shortwave antenna & portable CB radio. Expensive week for sure & very tired. Researched how to build EMP faraday cage, bit confused after some research. Updated my survival list.

I also believe that Anonymous 2:50 has strayed from the original request you had for prepping. I'm reasonably sure that not all of us share the same beliefs. Simply putting that they are at peace with their relationship with their creator should suffice as part of their prep without the scripture quotes. We are here for suggestions from you and others out there on prepping for any type of disaster whether natural or man-made. I could go off on my beliefs that HAARP is to blame for a lot of our "natural"disasters but I will save that for a conspiracy blog. People should have a personal relationship with who or what they consider is their creator but does not need to be broadcast on a survivalist blog. Now Y have strayed but felt this should be addressed. M.D., please correct me if you feel I am wrong or out of line…after all this is your blog.

This week I renewed by membership at the gym, bought 2 10 gal propane bottles and propane, bought 2 months worth of food from Sam's, put 2000 rds 5.56 onto stripper clips and into bandoliers.

I am a prepper like the rest of you.
I would want to know all of what is coming, so I could best prepare for the situation.
On the blogs I have come across, I have not seen anyone mention these visions of America's demise.
Do I want this to happen to America?
OF COURSE NOT!!!!!!!!!
I am a Christian, I study God's Word, and these visions, God led me too, show what is coming.
I compare to the Bible these visions, and they make sense.
God does judge wicked nations.
God judged Israel for it's wickedness, and sent the sword, and famine, and captivity to them.
Yet he sent prophets, time and time again, to warn Israel, (His chosen people), to repent and turn from their sins, so that these judgments would not happen.
But they rejected God, and these things of judgment came upon them.
Actually, I have been reading Jeremiah lately, and Jeremiah was chosen, before he was born, to go and warn Israel, but they wouldn't listen.
America needs to repent, and maybe God will relent and not allow these things to happen.
To come to all of you and not show why I believe these forewarnings, would not make sense.
These things that are coming, line up with how God judges evil.
I have shared, and am convinced they are going to happen, (unless we repent as a nation).
Now you preppers know what is really coming.
It is much worse than probably most of you had any idea of.
Getting right with God is the most important thing you can do.
You may be one of the millions killed in a nuclear blast, or shot by invading armies, or even tortured to death.
And those of us who are Christians know once you are dead, "it is too late," to make a choice for Christ, only eternal suffering is your lot!
Romans 10:9-10
I wanted to show what is coming and I had to show you why I believed this.
Didn't mean to preach.
Keep an eye on the news, see what Russia and China are doing.
———————————————
Mk, I am not bothered by your protest.
I have had "much worse" thrown my way.
I want to applaud the courage of this blog owner to allow me to post this.
God Bless Him.

I shared the most important things I could with you, what is really coming, and the "most important," getting right with God personally, and as a nation.
I forgot to share my preps.
I bought more canned goods over the weekend, with expiration dates extended as far into the future as possible. Don't have the resources or time to can myself.
I live in an apartment, wish I had some property of my own, but I don't.
You may be wondering if he(I), believes in God, well then why doesn't he do nothing and let God take care of him?
God expects us to do our part.
2 Thessalonians 3:10-12 10For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: "If a man will not work, he shall not eat."
11We hear that some among you are idle. They are not busy; they are busybodies. 12Such people we command and urge in the Lord Jesus Christ to settle down and earn the bread they eat.
Proverbs 27:12 A prudent man sees danger and takes refuge; but the simple pass on, and suffer for it.
Are you preparing to survive alone?
Here is some more Biblical advice;
-Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 "Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work: If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up! Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken."

Religious fanatics suck – think of all the peace in the world if there were no religions!
"My imaginary friend can beat up your imaginary friend."
Oh, and I bought some beans and rice.
Swear to Buddha! May the Force be with you! As-Salamu Alaykum! Zeus Rules! All hail Jupiter!

I didn't come here to bring trouble, just to "warn the wise."
Anonymous 4:32, I don't blame you, for blaming all the religious fanatics, because I can certainly feel the "love" coming from your post.
It's amazing how the mention of God can bring out the best/worst in people.
I am not here to mess up this blog with a religious war, the wise will take heed with what I shared, others will ignore me, and still others will mock and rage.
God Bless!

Anon 2:50…I'm not trying to have a religious debate, I acknowledge that your faith benefits you in your prepping. I have friends of many faiths and I personally don't think they are going to burn in "hell", and they don't proselytize to me. My ancestors walked this land a long time in tune with the earth, nature, and creator. When missionaries came, they tore children from their parents to be placed in church schools. Many never saw their families again. They were beaten whenever they spoke their native language and severely punished, sometimes even fatally beaten. All this has been documented. A minister named Kevin Annet worked in one of these schools. When he found out its history, he tried to get the church to make some kind of amends for their actions. Instead they defrocked him and destroyed his family and his life. This should be easy to find on the internet. It tears my heart out to think of what was done to the children and families in the name of Christianity.
Also prophecy was not confined to the select elite. Hopi, Mayan, Egyptian, and Norse (just to name a few) had their doomsday prophesies.
Most of us are educated and know what a lot of different (which really aren't all that different) prophesies are.
We have come together here to learn how to best prepare while most of us on a limited budget.
If being read scriptures is what really prepares us, then I'll plant myself in front of the idiot box and watch the 700 Club. I apologize to MD for taking so much space on this subject. This ends it for me.
I will only stick to the original subject at hand. You are doing a wonderful job with this blog and appreciate all the time and work you put into it. At the end of the week I will list what I've done for this week to prep.

Light week…
went through stock checking expiration date, and marking them easily visible with a Sharpie for easier future checks.
Continued exercises.

Ordered 10 pack of 2g packages of Celox for med kit.
Ordered more waterproof matches (only $13.34 for 900 matches plus free shipping).
Picked up folders and dividers to place important information into and place in large baggie to protect against water damage.
Placed silver in bug-out-bag in case I have to leave in a hurry to join my wife out-of-state.
